P. PERSANT SNOEP, a Dutch engineer, holder of doctor's degree from the Technical University of Delft Dissertation: Technisch-hygienische Beschowingen over de Economie van den Industriellen Arbeid, published in Leyden, Holland ; inquired on January 13, 1921, about the possibility of familiarizing himself with the activities of the Prague Psychotechnical Institute during the summer of 1921. He was informed that a visit in September would be welcome. F. PAULSEN, editor-in-chief of the journal Bauwelt, in his communication dated December 29, 1921, informed an inquirer Psychotechnical Institute ; about initial observations concerning the psychological and physiological aspects of bricklaying. His work in Fatigue Elimination is attracting a great deal of attention on both sides of the Atlantic, and I hope that you will find his article of interest and value". GILBRETH added: I also enclosing applications for membership in the Taylor Society and the Society of Industrial Engineers". In a later communication letter of February 13, 1923 ; GILBRETH informs Dr. RZEK that he received applications of two Czech specialists C.J. NIEDERLE and E. SLECHTA ; and that he sent the applications to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, together with his endorsement of the applications. On April 17, 1922 CURT PIORKOWSKI, director of an Institute for the Study of Human Work and Psychotechnics Institut fr Arbeitswissenschaft und Psychotechnik, in Berlin ; wrote a personal letter to Dr. RZEK, director of the Prague Psychotechnical Institute, in which he informs RZEK that he has available unpublished articles on the measurement and on the broader issue of assessing of abilities Eignungsprfungen ; . He would welcome their publication in Czech as well as in Russian and writes about this matter, because Dr. RZEK spoke to him about a plan to visit Moscow. Dihydrotestosterone DHT ; . Reducing levels of these hormones can reduce the size and growth of the prostate. In previous clinical studies, Teverelix LA has been shown to decrease serum testosterone levels and subsequently DHT in a dosedependent manner. Therefore, Teverelix LA can reduce serum testosterone levels to the low end of the normal range, avoiding a chemical castration and its related symptoms. In our first Phase II study in patients with BPH, Teverelix LA demonstrated a statistically significant improvement in symptoms of BPH as measured by the International Prostate Symptom Score IPSS ; . The FDA has confirmed that improvements in symptoms according to IPSS can serve as a single endpoint for therapeutic and regulatory review. We are very encouraged by this Phase II study which provides proof-of-concept of Teverelix LA as a potential treatment for BPH. Teverelix LA was well tolerated in this trial, without any signs of allergic reactions, and caused a rapid and prolonged improvement of the symptoms of BPH. These findings suggest that Teverelix LA, administered by subcutaneous injection two to six times per year, could be used not only for the improvement of symptoms but also to delay the progression of BPH. We believe that this compound has considerable potential in the treatment of BPH which currently has a substantial pharmaceutical market worth about .9 billion per annum 5.

Nephrology Division, UNIFESP, 2Research and Education Institute, Albert Einstein Hospital, Sao Paulo, Brazil Introduction: Mesangial cells MC ; have a prominent role in glomerular homeostasis and pathology. MC growth and matrix production are hallmarks of early stages of diabetic nephropathy. Prolonged exposure of MC to high ambient glucose induces cell hypertrophy, which is partly mediated by growth factor signaling, including transforming growth factor and cortisone.

Sexual dysfunction takes a physical, emotional and social toll on women. According to recent estimates by Laumann and colleagues, 1 43% of women have some type of sexual disorder Table 1 ; . Painful sex is common among postmenopausal women, and is an important factor in female sexual dysfunction. Dyspareunia pain during intercourse or attempted intercourse ; is often a presenting symptom of genital atrophy, which affects 75% or more of postmenopausal women.2 Painful sex syndromes account for 7% of female sexual dysfunction among all age groups, 1 and the incidence among postmenopausal women is thought to be much higher. Painful intercourse has a profound impact on a woman's sexual activity, and extreme discomfort can lead to avoidance or cessation of sex which, in turn, can negatively affect quality of life. In a recent national telephone survey funded by Pharmacia & Upjohn Company, 1 in 15 postmenopausal women polled reported that they had stopped having sex because of pain. Moreover, painful sex contributes to other types of female sexual dysfunction, including disorders of desire, arousal and orgasm.3.

Methylphenidate extended-release tablets Concerta ; The Council decided to let its Nov 00 decision not to exclude Concerta from the BCF listing for methylphenidate stand because 1 ; although it is true that Concerta has been compared only to immediate release methylphenidate, the longer duration of action about 12 hours for Concerta, compared to 3-6 hours for methylphenidate immediate-release tablets and about 8 hours for the sustained release tablets ; might give Concerta an advantage over other currently available methylphenidate products, and 2 ; although methylphenidate sustained release tablets should theoretically obviate the need for a midday dose, MTF prescription data show that midday doses are frequently prescribed for patients taking methylphenidate sustained release tablets. Analysis of a random sample of data from the Uniformed Services Prescription Database USPD ; for patients under the age of 18 who received more than one prescription for sustained-release methylphenidate during FY 00 showed that 60% 116 193 ; of patients received another medication for ADHD in addition to sustainedrelease methylphenidate and 40% of patients were prescribed a midday dose of either sustained-release methylphenidate or another medication for ADHD. The Council opted to include Concerta in the BCF listing for methylphenidate primarily because of the potential of the drug to obviate the need for midday doses and decrease the problems related to children receiving medication during the schoolday. It is too early to tell if patients receiving Concerta will require fewer noonday doses than patients receiving other ADHD medications. Future analysis of USPD data should cast some light on this question but will require data from patients who have received Concerta for a sufficient period of time for providers to assess its efficacy and to adjust therapy accordingly.
Phosphorylase MTA-Pase ; is the lead enzyme of a salvage pathway which regenerates adenine and methionine from MTA, the by-product of aminopropyl group transfer from decarboxylated AdoMet. African trypanosomes have an MTA-Pase with a broad substrate specificity. The MTA substrate analogue hydroxyethylthioadenosine HETA ; is cleaved by MTA-Pase and the ribose moiety is metabolized, possibly to a keto acid, which appears to be the active agent Bacchi et al, 1999 ; . HETA is able to cure acute T. b. brucei infections and infections caused by 6 of rhodesiense isolates in mice. HETA was 500 times less toxic to mammalian cells in culture than to trypanosomes Sufrin et al, 1996; Bacchi et al, 1997 ; . In mice, it has given no evidence of toxicity at doses and crixivan.
By the time you receive this newsletter, Bayview Animal Hospital BAH ; will have moved out of the Society's building on Champagne Avenue. While we are sad to lose such tremendous friends and neighbours, we are all very excited about the future possibilities that the space will allow us. While OHS and BAH remain good friends, both organizations feel that they have outgrown the present space. The OHS does a lot more for the community than it did when our 35-year-old building was new. We have been bursting at the seams for at least a decade. When we recently committed to training Veterinary Technicians in partnership with Algonquin College, the space issue really came to a head. As for BAH, they too were feeling crammed in. Dr. Bernhard Pukay, a BAH partner, told me that the practice has wanted to expand its services for some time but faced space constraints. BAH has pledged to do whatever the OHS needs over the transition period. The OHS will use the additional space not only for the students but also for an in-house clinic, mostly to spay and neuter its own animals before adoption. The new clinic will enable the OHS to gradually wind down its current voucher system for sterilizing animals adopted from the OHS, a program which, though very successful, was not 100% effective in ensuring that animals were sterilized. This will help us better realize the goal of reducing pet overpopulation in our community by allowing us to ensure that every dog and every cat leaving the building is leaving sterilized. An in-house clinic will also allow us a lot more flexibility to look at future programs for the animals in our community. As to the additional space, we think that it will also allow us to move the incoming animal area to the front of the building replacing the grungy area at the back of the building where animals are currently admitted. While the changes will begin to address our space concerns, clearly, we are only buying time. Our facility remains sadly outdated and far too small to accommodate our services. Over the next few months, the OHS will study its space requirements to determine how we will address these space constraints in the future, so that we can continue to offer valuable animal welfare services to our growing community. The two organizations have been co-located since 1953, when Dr. James Hutchison began renting space from the Society at its then Bayview Avenue location. Bayview Animal relocated as well when the Society opened in its present location on Champagne Avenue in 1968. The Hospital rented the facility, and in turn, the OHS utilized Bayview for its veterinary services. BAH moved on February 28 to its new location in Hampton Park Plaza, Unit 1407, at the corner of Carling and Kirkwood Avenues and concerta.
